So who here has ever worked retail? I'm sure most people have had at least a brief job at a retail place. Most people don't stay to long because they soon realize there retail is synonymous with "kill me!"
I worked at a big grocery retailer for over five years while I was going to school and let's just say, I amassed quite the many stories over the years and a bitter attitude towards reatil. I saw this comic years ago that showed a cashier greeting a customer with, "Hi, I'm Melissa. I'll be your cashier/therapist today."
Never have truer words been spoken. It's scary what people tell to a complete stranger whose ringing through their 3lb block of cheese and shaving cream. Mostly it's a rant about how shitty their day or life has been. Usually those rants are the ones that would have the person still talking at me, long after I was finished ringing in their groceries. I'd have to sit there with a smile on my face while thinking, "one more word lady and I'll strangle you with the scanner cord."
Then there's the uber frugal customers who claim the price of a product rang in higher than the shelf price. I once had a lady hold up my entire line because her package of Peeps rang up five cents higher than they were supposed to. I wanted to reach into my pocket and throw a nickel at her and say, "here now leave you cheap bastard!".
Then there's the creepy guys that hit on you at work. Once had an old guy tell me, "if only I was a few years younger." Then I said "only a few?" Ok, I didn't actually say that but I was thinking it. Another time, there was one guy who asked for my number and I declined. I wish I could have said what I was thinking, "sorry, I'm only into guys who have all their teeth."
Also there are the so dumb, you wonder how they dress themselves in the morning, customers. "Where is the cereal?" "Well I wouldn't try the 20 ft aisle labelled cereal, no you want the Herbal Essence aisle and it's that way." *Points to obscure corner of the store*
By now you have probably picked up on the reoccurring theme of never saying what you want to in the face of stupid. Thus is retail. You guys have any interesting stories of your own to share? If so, comment!
